Dunes, calm, and wild nature near Zandvoort
On the outskirts of Zandvoort lies a surprisingly diverse nature reserve: Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. Between the North Sea and cities like Haarlem and IJmuiden, a landscape of over 3,800 hectares stretches out, where tranquility and dynamism alternate perfectly.
This park is anything but “just dunes.” During a single walk, you move from rugged coastal dunes to sheltered dune valleys, from open sandy plains to old country estates. It is precisely this enormous variety that makes this area unique and beloved by hikers, photographers, and nature lovers.
A constantly changing landscape
What makes this park special is the transition from east to west:
- Historic country estates and woodlands on the edge
- Open dune valleys with flowers and shrubs
- Young, dynamic dunes towards the sea
This natural layering ensures that you experience a different scenery every time, even within a single route.

Wild animals up close
The park is one of the most species-rich nature reserves in the Netherlands. The special thing about it? Here you literally walk among the large grazers (at a safe distance), which gives a safari-like feeling, and all this right here in the Netherlands. Here you can encounter, among others:
- European bison
- Konik horses and Scottish Highland cattle
- Deer, foxes, and countless bird species
